The Kandinsky Sofa

The Kandinsky Sofa is a versatile sofa with a built-in console that converts into a table, enabling multiple uses like working, studying, and dining. In creating this space-saving, 3-in-1 design, I envisioned it diverse benefits for users. Adults occasionally working from home would appreciate the extra workspace. Children could use it as a desk for homework in the living room under parental supervision. Residents of tiny studios with limited space between their sofa and kitchen could use the folding table for both meals and work. The Kandinsky sofa provides an additional sleeping space for overnight guests. It could also be a reasonable solution for rented apartments and hotel rooms.

Initially, I designed a sofa with a built-in console that aligns with the sofa's height and conceals radiators when positioned against walls with radiator. The console above the hidden radiator offers space for lamps, photos, drinks, phones, and other items, while side vents allow air circulation. Later, inspired by childhood memories of folding book tables, I expanded the console concept by making it convertible into a work or dining table for two people.

The sofa’s built-in folding table ensures accessibility for people with disabilities in small rooms, as this furniture can be adapted for people with or without disabilities.

Rather than three separate pieces - a sofa, console and table - one combined furniture unit reduces the wood and packaging materials used in furniture production.

Though visual simple with geometric lines reminiscent of Constructivist architecture, this ergonomic design of the Kandinsky sofa has utility and aesthetic appeal and beyond its core function.
