The Scala wall sconce, a collaboration between Sally Thomas Cooper and Jason Kai Cooper, is more than a lighting fixture—it is a study in material and sculptural essence. This piece represents the culmination of a multifaceted dialogue between the co-founders of Thomas Cooper Studio, where a shared love for artistry transforms functional objects into works of quiet, commanding beauty. The piece embodies their shared philosophy: a relentless pursuit of the “inner poetry” of material.

Scala’s solid bronze body is a sculptural form in itself, featuring a fan of floating fins. Hand-patinaed to achieve a Deco-inspired, Sera-style oil-rubbed finish, the fins provide a rich, grounded counterpoint to the emanating light. This interplay of density and delicacy, of light and shadow, creates a dynamic sculptural presence that shifts with the viewer's perspective. The meticulous craftsmanship ensures that the light source is a subtle presence, allowing the form and material to take center stage.

The creation process itself is a core part of the piece's identity. Every Scala fixture (8” high x 4.5” wide x 3” projection) is individually hand-crafted by skilled artisans in the studio's Los Angeles workshop. This meticulous, hands-on approach allows for an exceptional level of detail and quality, making each Scala a truly singular work of art.
Through its masterful use of materials and a deep commitment to sculptural expression, Scala embodies the philosophy of Thomas Cooper Studio, proving that the most profound design resides in the elegant balance of form and function.
