Suwen Qin of DingLiang is conceived as a vessel for exploration—an instrument that bridges the past and the present in search of authentic expression. Its name, evoking the spirit of “inquiring into the essence in silence,” speaks to the profound dialogue it seeks to establish between the player and the qin. Guided by the philosophy of “innovation grounded in tradition,” the instrument embodies this vision through a rigorous engagement with the form, acoustics, and craftsmanship, respecting the refined spirit of its Tang dynasty predecessor while addressing the practical demands of contemporary performance and everyday life. The result is a synthesis of cultural continuity and functional optimization.
Modeled on the Tang dynasty qin preserved at Horyuji Temple, its silhouette faithfully echoes the balance of horizontal and vertical lines and the interplay of square and round contours, capturing the calm poise and subtle vitality that distinguish its ancient predecessor. Adapted for modern lifestyles, its dimensions have been scientifically refined to fit easily in a car trunk, greatly expanding where and how it can be enjoyed. Central to the design is its internal chamber, shaped through precision acoustic engineering. This innovation ensures that, even in its compact form, the qin produces the rich, resonant, and harmonically complex sound of a professional-grade, full-sized instrument, overcoming the tonal thinness often associated with small qins.
Every detail reflects meticulous craftsmanship. The surface features an innovative matte-grain lacquer finish. While retaining the gentle warmth of traditional lacquer, this unique texture provides a secure, anti-slip surface, significantly reducing stickiness or slippage caused by perspiration during play and enhancing fluid control. Going a step further with human-centered design, a widened string anchor at the tail and optimized proportions make finger movement across the strings easier, elevating playing comfort and confidence.
