The Olly Chair is a contemporary seating design that merges retro craftsmanship with modern minimalist aesthetics, creating a versatile chair suitable for a wide range of living and commercial environments. Built upon a solid wood frame structured through geometric mechanics, the chair achieves a delicate balance between structural stability and visual lightness, presenting a refined yet approachable presence within interior spaces.
The design’s most distinctive feature lies in the combination of classic button-tufted upholstery and a minimalist exposed wooden frame. Traditionally associated with luxurious furniture such as Chesterfield sofas and vintage armchairs, button-tufting is reinterpreted here within a modern context. The chair features a clean grid-patterned tufted surface that forms an orderly visual rhythm while preserving the handcrafted texture and identity of traditional upholstery techniques. At the same time, the structure follows the modernist philosophy of “less is more,” removing unnecessary decorative elements and allowing the natural wooden frame to remain visible.
Visually, the Olly Chair revolves around three key qualities: order, relaxation, and warmth. Its square geometric form reflects the modernist principle of “form follows function,” creating a calm and stable visual presence that helps bring a sense of balance to contemporary living spaces. The grid-tufted upholstery softens the rigidity of leather through subtle curved surfaces created by the pull points, giving the chair a gentle retro elegance. Meanwhile, the combination of leather and solid wood establishes a dialogue between soft and rigid, smooth and textured, preventing visual monotony while achieving a balanced material harmony.
The chair adopts a fully open armless design, breaking away from the physical boundaries of traditional armchairs. This openness allows greater freedom of movement and accommodates a variety of sitting positions—from upright seating to casual side-sitting or cross-legged relaxation. Multiple chairs can also be arranged together to form modular seating combinations, transforming the chair into a flexible sofa-like configuration.
The tufting technique stabilizes high-resilience cushioning, preventing filling displacement or sagging over time. The slightly reclined backrest and carefully curved seat surface distribute body pressure naturally along the hips and lower back, providing supportive yet relaxed seating for extended use.
