Lumen Desk

The idea for this desk began with a personal observation. My grandmother, who lives with Alzheimer's, would often remind me to keep my desk tidy, an instinct that stayed with her even as memory became harder to hold onto. Her reminders became the starting point for this design: what if the desk itself could offer that same gentle nudge, consistently, without needing someone else to say it?
The desk features a two-layer top: an acrylic work surface sits above a sensor panel embedded with LEDs. The sensor layer detects objects and their position on the desk in real time. In Standard Mode, if an unfamiliar object lingers beyond a set time, the LED grid lights up in the exact spot beneath it, in red, showing exactly what needs tidying rather than flashing the whole surface. In Focus Mode, the user arranges the desk for a specific task, presses the Focus switch on the front panel, and sets a duration using the adjacent dial. The system memorizes this setup and flashes if it isn't cleared once time runs out.
The legs use a scissor mechanism, a crossed support structure that slides along a track beneath the desktop to raise or lower the surface, rather than a simple telescoping pole. At the far end, a perforated panel, similar to a pegboard used in studios and workshops, lets users attach hooks, brackets, or small shelves wherever needed, creating a flexible storage layout that can be rearranged as needs change. A slide-out drawer keeps items like a keyboard tucked away when not needed.
The exposed metal framing and perforated surfaces give the desk an industrial, utilitarian character, one that visually signals its functional, tech-forward purpose rather than concealing it. Beyond the sensor layer, the desk is built from aluminum alloy, keeping it approachable as everyday furniture rather than a gadget.
What started as a way to carry forward my grandmother's reminders has grown into something I believe could help many others stay organized and focused, whether managing daily clutter or simply needing a quiet, consistent nudge to reset.
