PhytoSymbiosis Seat is a living outdoor bench that redefines urban furniture by integrating parametric design with a real plant symbiosis system. Developed through nine months of community observation in London, this project responds to the growing disconnect between residents and nature.

While many products rely on symbolic representations of nature, this design offers something radically different: a dynamic, reciprocal relationship between humans and living organisms. The frame is made of bio-concrete bricks with a porous surface structure, optimized through material experiments to support the growth of English ivy. Its parametric Voronoi-based frame is derived from botanical growth patterns, allowing the structure to physically guide and accommodate the plant's climbing behavior.

The result is not just a seat, but a co-living system. Over time, the ivy attaches to the concrete through natural root adhesion, forming a composite structure that grows stronger - reversing the typical degradation of materials. What makes this project truly transformative, however, is its social dimension. Residents are invited to water the seat and guide the ivy's growth, turning it into an active participant in daily life. This simple act of care fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members, encouraging them to see public space as something they collectively shape and sustain.

The bench naturally becomes a gathering point—a place where neighbors meet, exchange knowledge about plants, and engage in informal conversations. By embedding interaction into the fabric of the furniture, the design nurtures social cohesion and strengthens community bonds. It transforms public seating from a functional amenity into a platform for relationship-building and shared experience.

Aligned with the UN SDGs, this Seat delivers measurable impacts: it supports local biodiversity - 100% native plants, reduces carbon emissions by 62%, and encourages community engagement—increasing volunteer-participating by 40% in pilot neighborhoods.

By merging digital fabrication, ecological research, and participatory design, PhytoSymbiosis offers a replicable model for resilient, life-affirming public spaces. It's not just a seat, but a growing ecological organ in city – it renders the random beauty of life with algorithmic precision, giving the infrastructure the ability to evolve itself and to interact with urban residents.
