The Array Swing reimagines the familiar park bench as an engaging piece of outdoor furniture, extending Street + Garden’s established Array Suite with gentle, controlled movement. Designed for Park Edge, Yarrabilba, Queensland, it combines the clean geometry and distinctive detailing of the Array range with a more interactive way to experience public space.
The project began with a simple question: how can public furniture offer something more memorable than conventional seating while remaining durable, safe and appropriate for everyday use? The answer was to transform the existing Array backed bench into a suspended seat that allows users to gently sway while sitting, relaxing or enjoying their surroundings.
A robust powder coated steel frame supports a suspended backed bench constructed from steel and spotted gum hardwood. Integrated swing stoppers limit movement to 30 degrees, creating a controlled experience that retains the calming sensation of movement without allowing excessive swing. The two-part construction separates the overhead frame from the bench, supporting practical installation and easier maintenance and repair.
Material selection was driven by longevity and performance in Australian outdoor environments. Powder coated steel provides structural strength and durability, while spotted gum hardwood brings warmth and comfort to the user experience. Two-tone powder coating can also be specified to strengthen the product’s relationship with its surrounding landscape and broader placemaking strategy.
Designed and manufactured in Brisbane using locally sourced materials, the Array Swing reflects Street + Garden’s approach to creating durable, considered furniture for the public realm. It extends an existing furniture language into a new typology rather than introducing complexity for its own sake.
More than a place to sit, the Array Swing changes the way a familiar piece of outdoor furniture can be experienced. It introduces movement, curiosity and a sense of discovery into an everyday park setting, demonstrating how thoughtful industrial design can create more engaging and memorable public spaces.
