An memorial capsule is a biodegradable urn designed to support grieving pet owners through a gentle and continuous farewell process. Drawing on Japanese cultural traditions, where cremated remains are often temporarily kept at home, this product offers an intimate and emotionally supportive form of memorialization.
The capsule’s separable structure allows ashes to be buried in the earth together with the urn itself, offering a natural return to the soil. A small charm can also be detached and kept by the owner—designed to be worn as a memorial accessory. This tactile object provides something to touch, keep close, and remember, helping soften the pain of complete loss and creating a personal ritual for mourning.
Unlike traditional urns that signal finality, An memorial capsule embraces the idea of a gradual transition, offering flexibility for the owner to move at their own pace—from initial grief to remembrance, to eventual closure.
Made from a custom bioplastic infused with powdered oyster shells, the capsule naturally biodegrades in the soil. Its warm texture and soft contours invite touch, enabling new daily rituals such as holding the capsule or placing it in a familiar space in the home.
The design was developed with close attention to the experiences and voices of bereaved pet owners, incorporating perspectives inspired by grief care. It responds to a widely felt emotional gap: the absence of meaningful mourning rituals for pets, even as their role as family members becomes more deeply recognized.
An memorial capsule presents an alternative to rigid, formal memorial systems. It supports emotional continuity, respects individual grieving processes, and offers a beautiful, natural way to honor memory.
