The "FeatherScape" project was inspired by the designer's observations of feather-plucking behavior in their two cockatiels. Research revealed that while companion parrots' basic dietary needs are typically met, their natural behaviors—such as foraging, chewing, climbing, cognitive exploration, and independent choice—are often restricted by monotonous living environments. Existing pet products also tend to focus on feeding, cleaning, or single-purpose play, with little capacity to continuously adjust activities based on parrots' behavioral feedback and shifting interests.
To address this, the project designed a parrot environmental enrichment system consisting of modular physical products and a mobile app. The physical products integrate rotating foraging, smart feeding, drinking, climbing, tactile exploration, and behavioral observation, creating diverse sensory stimulation and cognitive challenges for parrots. The companion app helps owners record behavioral responses, manage daily care, and receive activity rotation recommendations based on changing interests. Centered on an "observe—understand—recommend—interact—review and rotate" workflow, the system enables products to continuously adapt alongside parrots' behavioral changes. The project aims to address activity repetition and insufficient stimulation in captive environments, while helping owners understand and respond to their animals' needs more scientifically and build a more responsible human-animal relationship.
